Priests and Hookers Ball, Halloween 2002
This show was a phenomenal success for BK and all of the bands
involved. The Kurtain would like to thank Erraknid, Uglyhead,
River Red, and especially Sinn, who was our Britney.
On a much larger scale, we would like to extend our eternal
gratitude and much worship upon the Goddess Charlie
Drown, Kull, and
those other guys in her band for the best Halloween EVER.
Our own personal Britney, with a Big Fat Juicy Corndog.
2 priests and a hooker walk into a bar...
Here's A Review of the Show from JM
Charlie Drown - Priest &
Hookers Ball - Review
On the phone, Charlie asks nervously if I want to go to The Ball she is
presenting on Halloween. I had already been planning it for the past two weeks.
She adds that I could write a review if I wanted. I had already been planning
that too. She tells me to show up at 6pm. That's when it is going to start. I
show up as a Priest, there are already people dressed up and standing in the
back by the bar, laughing loudly, drinking and anticipating the night. NIN is
being pumped through the PA and I look around for Charlie. Seeing a nun like
creature with an odd featureless mask on, I know I must be getting close. The
Nun walks over, slips up the mask and there she is smiling that twisted Charlie
smile. No matter how long I have known her, I can only describe her as
breathtaking, eerie and intimidating. She laughs shyly as she sarcastically
answers my question, "so how do you expect tonight to go?" "ahhh.....
there will probably be like two people here and we will all suck." She
walks with grace away from me and spins around, flashing a pair of tiny pink
panties under her robe and says. "OK, have a good time, I have to make sure
everything is going right". I notice that more people have flooded in.
There is already about 100 people in the bar, it's only 7pm, I am getting
pumped.
Erraknid takes the stage, they are great! The stage looks a bit crowded, but
considering most of the girls up there are naked and dirty dancing, that's ok
with me and it seems ok with everyone else as well. Everyone is beaming from ear
to ear. Erraknid are ambient and industrial sounding, almost like Skinny Puppy.
A good ice breaker and opener for the night.
Another band, painted white, barely dressed, Uglyhead were pretty well the same
as Erraknid, except Uglyhead had a harder edge to them.
I see Kull floating around with a video camera, he stops by once and a while and
tells me that he is shooting some footage for the internet. He is enjoying
himself to say the least!
There is a fire show, fire eating, breathing and it seems to give the night a
darker edge, very surreal. There are lit pumpkins on every table and the night
seems to be getting more devilish.
By the time Uglyhead finishes, it looks like the place is filling up with people
in all types of costumes.
Beef Kurtain play, a special treat for me. They are very comical and
entertaining. Bass player dressed as a hooker, wig and all, is a hysterical
element to the dirty comical songs they played. Just picture a drunken man
singing dirty limericks with a very animated band behind him and you have Beef
Kurtain. They get the crowd interacting and pumped up. I stand by the stage so I
can hear the words and see the chick dancing with a corndog.
Next up is River Red, They hold the crowd and get more people up on the floor
then any of the other bands so far. The crowd swells as more people keep coming
through the door. I would say the place is almost packed at this point. There
are women dressed as hookers everywhere. Priests hanging out watching the
hookers. River Red are very loud, heavy and groove orientated. There set is
great and very strong. A great intro to what comes next!!!
A guy gets up who can hang 30 lbs off of his dick!!! He wins the freak contest,
the audience cheers.
There is a long wait for Charlie Drown, waiting, everyone in the place is up on
the floor, pressed up against the stage. The music starts. Empress. The crowd
gets closer to the stage as she slithers onto it in ballet shoes and a veil.
Kull is seen getting his guitar, Spider takes stage right. The band is ready to
go. The onslaught that follows is mesmerizing. The front row is singing along...
Charlie dominating the entire audience... Kull spitting and spewing beer on
everyone who dares to stay close enough to be hit. I am struck at how pro they
are and how close to the CD they sound. What a great band! Not only do they kick
ass but they completely entertain as well. Charlie transforms from one character
to another for almost every song. Her voice, amazing. My favorite song, Dedd
Phukk, has people singing along, Charlie in black tape, fishnets and not much
else. I am awestruck! By the end of their set, they do a cover song, I know it
well and so does everyone else, they have the whole place signing along, "I
want you to want me" by Cheep Trick, Charlie Drown style. As the whole
place is erupting with voices singing I look around and see the faces of many
smiling, ecstatic and fulfilled people. This IS definitely a Halloween worth
remembering. J. M.
